When it comes to makeup, most women seem to have one of two problems: a cosmetic bag that's overflowing, but no clue how to use what's inside OR you’re a member of the lipgloss and mascara at the bottom of your purse squad. Makeup shopping can be overwhelming. There are thousands of choices on the cosmetic shelves so let me break it down and help you step up your game without wasting space (or money) on unnecessary items. #letsdothis

Moisturizer is your best friend for life. Fellow Winnipeg-winter survivors, I see you— the dryness is REAL. Applying moisturizer before makeup not only hydrates your skin, it provides a base for makeup AND acts as a barrier between your skin and makeup, preventing breakouts. Moisturizers can be expensive and I'll admit, I’ve been known to splurge in this department before. Your skin is forever so it’s important to invest now so you don't regret it later, however, there are some amazing drugstore options that don’t break the bank. My recommendations are the following:

Whether you’re a foundation or tinted moisturizer kinda gal, finding one that matches your skin tone is everything. My go-to suggestion for the past year is Tarte's Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation. This full-coverage, fluid formula contains 20 percent water to hydrate dry skin as it covers and masks redness, dark spots, and uneven skin tone all while softening the look of pores and fine lines. I seriously can’t get enough.

If you aren't able to commit just yet or don’t require foundation on the daily, Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer is your new homie. This sheer, lightweight formula with a touch of colour is the perfect foundation substitution for a natural finish and glowing skin.

TIP: Do not use your fingers to apply tinted moisturizer or foundation…ever! Doing so will not apply the product evenly, leaving your skin looking unbalanced and patchy. Be sure to use a brush and/or blending sponge! This little tip alone will change everything!

When it comes to concealer it’s important to remember that you choose a shade lighter than your skin. Whether you’re applying to brighten your under-eye or cover blemishes, the trick is to pick a shade lighter than your foundation. This product is defiantly a must-have if you’re a woman on the go and looking for a quick pick-me-up! Test out the following concealers the next time you're in the beauty department.

Eyeliner is a great product if you’re looking to get dolled up and fast. Top it with mascara and you’re out the door. My pick to achieve eye perfection is with Kat Von D’s Tattoo liner. This has been my ride-or-die for years.

Your brows frame your face, don’t neglect them! Benefit’s Gimme Brow applies product evenly and more importantly; easily. This product is definitely a must-have for your beauty bag!

The key to eyeshadow is to blend, blend, blend! Using a fluffy blending brush, use windshield-wiper motions while applying and you won't go wrong. When it comes to picking up a palette, don’t hesitate splurge a little. You get what you pay for in this department! If eyeshadow freaks you out, stick to neutral colors to give your eyes some depth. Give it a try and remember, if you blend you won’t go wrong.

Bronzer helps define the face and give a warm, sun-kissed complexion PLUS it makes your skin look youthful and teeth look whiter! Keep in mind that a little goes a long way. Get the ultimate glow with any of the following!

Blush is the easiest way to add some youthful colour to your skin. I always suggest to stick to coral tones as it is a shade that works on everyone. My pick is Benefit's CORALista Box o’ Powder Blush. It's the perfect coral-pink to warm up your complexion. Sweep this powder onto cheeks anytime, anywhere. PLUS it's scented and smells amazing.

give them lip!

Lipstick is a must have for us all. Adding lipstick can transform your whole look in seconds, have fun with it and take risks! If you struggle finding a color that works best, the same rules as apply blush applies; stick to coral tones!

DIOR - Rouge Dior Lipstick

GIVENCHY - Rouge Interdit Satin Lipstick

fenty - Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick

TIP: Darker/bolder colours can make small lips appear even smaller. Try using nude or soft tones for a plumper pout!
